What Are The Requirements To Become A Crane Operator?

Are you thinking about becoming a crane operator? Smart thinking! A career in crane operation is a good choice for several reasons, but before we get into that, let’s go over the requirements to become a crane operator.

Requirements To Become A Crane Operator

The requirements to become a crane operator are:

  • 3-5 years of experience in operating hydraulic and crawler cranes in the industry
  • The ability to properly size cranes and rigging
  • Can evaluate lift plans for accuracy and safety
  • Must hold a CDL license and have a good driving record
  • Completion of updated OSHA, MSHA, and NCCCO training
  • Must have an NCCCO certification

Obtaining a NCCCO certification, if you do not have one already, has its own list of requirements. These include:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age
  • Compliance with NCCCO’s Substance Abuse Policy and Code of Ethics
  • Pass a written examination(s)
  • Pass any applicable practical examination(s)

There are some crane operator jobs that do not require a CDL, however, be sure to read the job description thoroughly. If you don’t have a CDL, but are interested in obtaining one, you will need to fill out the CDL application and meet those general requirements to become a crane operator.
